Allt-A-Bhainne
Rating: B
Region: Speyside (Glenlivet)
Owner: Chivas Brothers Ltd (Pernod Richard)
Founded: 1975
The distillery was built by Chivas Brothers, when it was a subsidiary of Seagram, purely as a supplier of malt whisky for blending, and specifically their 100 Pipers blend and thus to date there has never been a distillery release. Apparently because Chivas owns no Islay distilleries it covers their need of smoky whisky by having 50% of the distilleries output peated to 10ppm, and although it is readily available in the Independent sector I haven’t as yet come across a bottling of their peated spirit.
As far as looks go, it is not what you consider a looker, but equally it is not an ugly distillery, I suppose the fairest way to put it is that it is a functional late 1970’s building, and I’ll leave you to make up your mind about that. Flavour wise, when aged in American oak it is a fairly straightforward Spey with a pleasant citric character, although a 2014 bottling in The Douglas Laing Old Particular range showed that it can be voluptuous and juicy and although I’ve not taste a poor bottling, it is certainly not a whisky that gets the pulse racing!
