The nose is very chocolaty with wheat flakes, barley and spicy/ gingery STR tannins. Juicy red fruit and astringent peat notes follow. It becomes quite herbal, possibly a mixture of the cask and spirit character and subtly mentholated. With time the fruit becomes slightly dried and sweeter with a touch of coffee. The alcohol is very well integrated.
The palate is also chocolaty and slightly tarry with spicy STR tannins, earthy peat, sweet peat, juicy red fruit and ginger. Very alcoholic and masked with a chewy, winey, peaty, mentholated and herbal finish.
Water doesn't make a huge change to the nose. Maybe there is a touch more vanilla and the fruit is a little sweeter/ glycerol coated. With time an almost Campbeltown-esque briny/ fishiness appears along with tar and pepper. The palate is fuller, softer and simpler. Mouth-filling, dense and chunky with again an almost Campbeltown-like note in the finish and lingering bonfire smoke, tar and darker fruit. Impressive finish!
