An intensely meaty and treacly nose with tight wood tannins, fishy peat, tarry peat and hints of violets, sandalwood, cumin, cinnamon and burnt sugar. In fact it has a sort of Longrow-like character.
The palate is quite tight due to the combination of a high abv and the wood tannins. Visceral, meaty, and tarry with shredded wheat, orange, pepper, sandalwood, burnt sugar and bitter dark chocolate. There is an absolute explosion of raw peat on the finish with bbq smoked meat, tar, treacle, bitter tannins and more tar. Slight cardamom and green tea after-taste.
A drop of water makes the nose softer and smokier with green wood smoke and hints of apricot, peach and barley. Overall there is less peat but more fruit. The palate although softer does show a little youthful rose petal spirit character. Still quite peaty but it’s more of a smoked meat character. Still herbal with green wood and dustier, chocolaty tannins. Long, bitter chocolate and treacle finish.
