Auchroisk

Rating: A
Region: Speyside (Speyside-Glenlivet)
Owner: Diageo
Founded: 1972

The distillery was built by Justerini & Brooks, who were part of the International Distillers & Vintners group, primarily to supply malt for its J&B bottling. However even before it had begun distilling it had been sold to Grand Metropolitan, which eventually merged with Guinness in 1997 to form Diageo.

Originally the style of the malt was full, fruity and quite estery, which is typified by the 23 year old single cask released by Dewar Rattray in 2014 or the 25 year old single cask released by Claxton’s in 2016. However, these days the style is somewhat lighter and nuttier in character, which is the style Diageo currently wants for its blends, as can be seen the ‘official’ distillery release in their Flora & Fauna range. This change in character has been brought about by the reduction in the wort fermentation time from over 100 hours to just over 50 hours.

Auchroisk is a very under ratted malt whisky, which is probably down to the fact that it isn’t really promoted by Diageo, like a number of their other distilleries and so it sort of flies under the radar for many whisky drinkers. However there is no denying the quality of the spirit that the distillery produces and I think it very much deserves an A rating
