Balblair

Rating: A
Region: Northern Highlands
Owner: Inverhouse Distillers
Founded: 1790

I have not tasted a bad distillery bottled release, full stop! And there are not many distilleries that I could say that about. Distillery manager (at the time of writing) John MacDonald appears to be a wizard at blending spirit that has been matured in both American oak and sherry butts, gracefully brining the best of both cask types to bear with the older releases. However as much as I love their mature whisky, and I did love the 1965 vintage, it’s their 10 year old spirit that is possibly the star, certainly in terms of ‘bang for yer buck’ as they say!

Another thing I like about the distillery is its lack of using age statements. Since 2007 all the distillery releases have just sported the year of distillation on the label. Although the distillery will claim that they were the first distillery to do this, Glenrothes actually beat them to it as they began doing the same thing, way back in 1993. However with that being said I would rather have a dram of young Balblair than I would of young Glenrothes!
