Herno Distillery

The Herno distillery is based in the village of Dala, near the city of Hamosand and is Sweden’s first gin-only distillery. Launched in December 2012 it has quickly established itself as a quality gin producer. In fact distiller Jon Hillgren was awarded the title of Gin Grand Master in 2013 at The Spirit Masters Awards. Made with only natural and organic botanicals, mainly of Swedish origin, Jon distils their home made wheat spirit twice in their 250 litre German pot still called Kierstin. Before the second distillation the spirit is macerated with juniper and coriander for 18 hours before the other botanicals – meadowsweet, cassia, black pepper, vanilla, lingon berries and lemon peel are added and then re-distilled. I tasted the Navy Strength blind when judging the 2017 World Gin Awards and gave it the top score of 9.3/10, and the standard bottling is no slouch either!
