For the 2014 World Whisky Awards - Best Islay Single Malt
Nose: A serious, briny-peat fest! Bold and brash but beautifully rounded. Charcoal, tar and iodine power through the rich, almost Pedro Ximinex-like sherry. The peat is pungent and manurey.
Palate: Opens with sweet plums, dates and raisinated fruit. It’s show a plethora of oxidative, almost winey notes. Buckets of drying tannin, dusty peat and dusty violet follow.
Finish: Very intense with smoky charcoal, burnt wood, iodine and menthol. The drying tannic theme continues but the sweetness of the treacly fruit balances. Very salty after-taste.
Conclusion: It’s a huge, uncompromising peated, sherry monster – with complexity!
