The aromas are quite heavy on the Rivesaltes cask with oxidised winey fruit and toffee. Subtle smoky peat and astringent herbal peat appears along with a touch of ash tray! It really takes some time for the Caol Ila character to break free from the wine cask, but they do. With time the wine notes become slightly perfumed.
The palate s also heavy on the cask with a lovely combination of oxidised fruit and subtle medicinal peat. Earthy and ashy with the Caol Ila spirit character forcing its way through. Masked, cereal, menthol and epat finish.
Water softens the nose and makes the wine, and smoke notes a little sweeter. Not as complex as it is neat. On the palate it displays more distillery character. Longer with an herbal tobacco, gritty peat and sweeter fruit finish.
