Scotch Whisky Distillery of the Year Release' 50.7%

In celebration of this huge achievement in the Scottish Whisky Awards 2022, the team at Raasay have created a rather special single malt. Their unpeated spirit has been matured in a combination of Four Roses Bourbon and Quercus Humboldtii Columbian oak casks. Distilled in August 2018 and bottled this month, at 5 years of age, it is their oldest bottling to date.

The nose is oily and toasty with plenty of toasty Andean oak character up first. Some fresh/ crisp spirit appears along with a little youthful rose petal. The oak notes develop a lovely creaminess and hints of ginger, musky honeysuckle appears. Although the Andean oak is noticeable it’s not overly dominating.

The palate opens with the oily, youthful spirit with a subtle earthiness. Less oaky but the toasty oak underpins and supports. Lovely intensity with developing barley, rose Turkish delight, sweet cinnamon, ginger and pepper. Long, musky/ floral finish with toasty Chardonnay-eque notes in the after-taste.

Diluted the nose is less oak influenced and shows some heavier spirit character. Earthy cereal, loam, fish oils, white pepper, raw cinnamon sticks and straw now appears. The palate is like the nose heavier and weightier with the barley being a little sweeter and more emphasis on the cereal, earth and cinnamon. The oak really only comes through on the finish.
